Work We Do

Our work primarily aims to nurture collective leadership among marginalised and oppressed women labouring in the unorganised sector (women beedi workers and other working class women and families). For women to assert their constitutional rights and human dignity and live free of discrimination and violence of all forms. We are striving for collectives like Neralu Beedi Workers’ Union and Dalita Muslim Mahila Okkoota to be platforms for all marginalised and oppressed women – Dalits, Muslims, beedi workers, labourers in other unorganised sector work to come together and use this collective strength to raise voices for social & economic justice, gender equality, communal harmony and against exploitation and violence in families, work, and those inflicted by the state or its powerful systems. We raise the political consciousness, awareness about the rights and existing laws, financial capability, and leadership among women to involve themselves in public participation and changing the system for the better. We have consistently fought against injustice and discrimination based on religion/caste/class/gender. We hold ourselves accountable to the community we represent and work with as much as we want the state to be accountable to its oppressed groups.

Our Initiatives

Nurturing collective leadership among women

Building collective leadership among women is one of our primary objectives. We believe that this can empower women to access their rights and entitlements for dignified living

Strengthening public health system and improving women’s health

We work with the local healthcare facilities through women collectives to strengthen this system and improve accessibility of healthcare services.

Citizen participation and strengthening public systems

Raising the political and critical consciousness of the women is of utmost importance in order to question the status quo and for women to be able to completely participate in the public systems

Addressing domestic violence and all forms of violence

We build the capacity of women and women collectives to recognise violence and respond to it.

Education

We engage with children and facilitate their education and learning as we believe in Dr B R Ambedkar’s philosophy of education being a way to attain dignity, progress, independence, raise consciousness, and fight oppression.
